Essential Things you Need to know about Flossing

Brushing your teeth alone is not sufficient in reaching difficult areas of your tooth surfaces, that’s why flossing was introduced in the 19th century by Dr. Levi Spear Parmly from New Orleans. Dr. Parmly was a dentist and encouraged his own patients to floss their teeth using a thin, waxen silk thread that he invented. He also wrote the importance of flossing in his book entitled “A Practical Guide to the Management of Teeth”. In this article we will learn more about the advantages of flossing and how to properly floss your teeth.

Why Floss your Teeth?

Did you know that less than 5% of the total Aussie population regularly floss their teeth? No wonder that moderate or severe gum disease is present in 22.9% of the Australian population. Flossing is one of the most essential oral hygiene habits and a must in your daily oral routine. It does not only remove plaque stuck between your teeth, but it also prevents you from getting gum disease, bad breath and promote your overall health!

According to Australian Dental Association (ADA), it is very essential to use interdental brushes like floss to help prevent gum disease and cavities. When you floss, the sticky film between your teeth or plaque is removed. Plaque has bacteria that feeds the leftover food in your mouth releasing acid that can cause cavities.

While the plaque that is not removed from in between your teeth will harden and turn into tartar or calculus. Then, it will lead to gum disease or periodontitis which can damage the soft tissue and destroy the bone that supports your teeth, causing tooth loss. Periodontitis is very common among people, but it can be preventable if you know how to floss properly!

How to Properly Floss?

The flossing step is one of the most overlooked parts in your dental health care routine. It's important to learn how proper technique can remove plaque and clean teeth, but it requires attention! Here are basic steps on what you need for effective cleaning:

Step 1: Get approximately 30 cm to 45 cm of floss. Wrap it around your middle fingers and leave 5 or 10 cm of floss to utilize. However, you can also use floss picks for easy cleaning. They’re also perfect if you struggle in using the traditional flossing techniques.

Step 2: Gently slide between your teeth so that you do not damage your gums with abrupt movement.

Step 3: In a up-and-down motion following the curvature of the teeth, move the floss against each tooth. Gently push out the floss from in between the teeth & work your way around across the rest of your teeth in your mouth.

When is the best time to Floss?

Well, it makes sense to floss in conjunction with brushing since you are already in the bathroom and do it twice a day.  As a Hygienist, I recommend you floss after each meal if it’s not always feasible to brush your teeth at least you have cleaned the in-between of your teeth not to say at all that flossing will any shape or form replace brushing.

That’s why I recommend using our eco-friendly Tooth Floss Picks because first of all it's easy to carry anywhere and you can use it anywhere. It serves not only as a floss but as a pick at the end of the handle which comes in very handy to remove that sticky food debris that is stuck on the tooth surface which we all love to devour.

Flossing should become a habit as a part of your daily oral care hygiene routine just like taking a shower everyday. Also, what matters most is that you clean between your teeth and do it the proper way.
