How Teeth Become Sensitive?

We have experienced having sensitive teeth at one point, and we know it can be a minor irritation to a big problem. But why do we experience having sensitive teeth? What are the foods and drinks that make our teeth hypersensitive? Read on to learn more.

What causes dental hypersensitivity?

1. Teeth Grinding

Regularly clenching or grinding your teeth which is also known as bruxism, is one of the things that can cause your tooth to become sensitive. Doing this actually wears down your tooth enamel, which can make your dentin less preserved as teeth grinding creates minor damage to your enamel that can also create other oral health problems.

2. Acidic and Sugary Foods and Drinks

Foods and drinks that are high in sugar and acid can cause discomfort to your teeth. Foods and beverages like candies, sodas, ice cream, and coffee can actually erode your tooth enamel. Also, if you already have sensitive teeth, avoid foods that contain high amounts of sugar because it can be broken down by bacteria on the teeth that will lead to decay, causing even more damage to your teeth.

3. Brushing Too Hard

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid brushing too hard to your tooth enamel from wearing down. Brushing too aggressively can also make your gums recede, which may lead to the exposure of the root and will lead to a heightened risk of dental sensitivity and risk of cavities.

4. Periodontal Disease

Periodontal or gum disease like gingivitis causes sensitivity. If you have inflamed gum tissue, it is because of the loss of supporting ligaments that exposes the roots, leading to your tooth's nerve. Always make sure to put proper care in your oral and dental health to avoid plaque buildup that will lead to periodontal disease.

5. Cracked teeth

If you have a broken or cracked tooth, it will be unprotected from bacteria that can travel through the crack into the roots, which will cause sensitivity and tooth pain. Moreover, your cracked tooth will not only hurt if you are chewing, but it will also become sensitive if you are eating or drinking hot and cold foods and beverages.
