Seven Foods That Stain Teeth

A radiant, white smile is something we all want. But despite diligently brushing your teeth twice a day, you may still be finding that your teeth look less than luminous. The appearance of our teeth matters. It affects both our physical appearance and our psychological health, and it can dampen our confidence and success.

If you have been maintaining an optimal dental hygiene routine and are still seeing discolouration or stains on your teeth, these foods are likely to blame.

1. Tea

Tea contains substances known as “tannins” which can stain your bright, white teeth. Depending on the type of tea you drink, you may be left with different stains. For example, green tea will stain your teeth grey, while black tea will stain your teeth yellow.

If you love your tea and want to avoid stains, many experts suggest choosing higher quality teas. Adding a dash of milk also reduces tea’s ability to discolour your teeth.


2. Coffee

Much like tea, coffee contains stain-causing tannins. But that’s not the only reason why coffee has made this list.

In addition to tannins, coffee is very acidic. If you consume acidic foods after a cup of java, you’ll stain your teeth all the more quickly.

Giving up coffee isn’t an option for many, and there is a way to cut down on the stains. Many experts suggest drinking your coffee with a to-go lid as it sends coffee more directly down your throat rather than in your mouth.


3. Citrus Fruits


Citrus fruits, being highly acidic, can stain your teeth faster than most foods. Although they are nutrient-packed and full of vitamin C, fruits like oranges, grapefruits and lemons can erode your tooth’s enamel. This allows the yellow-tinged dentin (the tissue beneath your enamel) to show.

4. Sweets and Sodas

The sugars in these foods and beverages like to stick to your teeth well after they’ve been enjoyed. The bacteria in your mouth then latch on to these sugars and release acids, causing tooth decay and a less-than-white smile.


Soda is arguably even worse than cookies and hard candies. Because soda (including diet sodas) are acidic, this drink can cause holes in your teeth, which will negatively affect the appearance of your teeth.


5. Dark Coloured Sauces

Sauces with soy, tomato, or curry base can easily stain your teeth. If you’re concerned about keeping your teeth white and bright, choose light-coloured or cream-based sauces instead.


6. Berries

No one will argue that berries are an important part of everyone’s diet. But because of the rich pigment in blueberries, pomegranates, and blackberries, they can quickly and easily leave stains on your teeth.

Here’s some good news, though: strawberries won’t stain your teeth. In fact, they may even brighten your smile thanks to the malic acid they contain.


7. Wine


Both red and white wines can easily discolour your teeth. Wine is highly acidic, and the tannins in red wine cause greyish stains on your otherwise pearly whites.
